savethewailes: I forgot I was going to put up more of these old animal/scientific illustration things.. This is a Southern Cassowary, probably the most commonly recognized of the three species of cassowary. It has the largest crest of any of the cassowaries, along with two large red wattles that hang from it’s neck. These large flightless birds are distributed throughout Australia and New Guinea. The southern cassowary is the largest of the cassowaries, only rivaled in size by emus and ostriches.  These dinosaurs birds mainly rummage around for things to eat on the forest floor, like fallen fruit, fungi, and small invertebrates. They are very solitary, secretive and shy animals, but can be vicious when threatened. Their specialized feet have unique claws that act as both tools and weapons; the outer toe is pretty normal, the middle toe has a large thick claw, and the inner toe has a long, more slender claw several inches long that it uses to dig, and defend itself. They will kick would be predators with these feet sometimes giving fatal blows to animals and people. Blue Crested Velociraptor’s Cassowary’s main threat today is habitat loss and traffic. Conservation efforts have been put into effect for sanctuaries for all types of cassowaries, and road signs are placed in major highways for drivers to be cautious of crossing cassowaries.  Drawing done in February 2008 with colored pencils, ink and marker.
